Centreville Attorneys Dedicated to Helping Injured Workers

Maryland workers’ compensation firm handles claims at all stages

For over 80 years, the skilled team at Samuel H. Paavola Law Offices, in Centreville, has helped injured clients throughout Eastern Shore obtain workers’ compensation benefits, and we can fight for your right to the benefits you deserve, too. Maryland law allows you to file this type of claim  for medical expenses and lost wages without having to show that your employer was negligent in any way. While this system is supposed to help protect the rights of injured workers, it also bars filing a lawsuit against your employer. We can explain everything you need to know before you proceed with a workers’ compensation case.

Determining all benefits injured workers are entitled to

We work closely with our clients to determine the full extent of benefits to which they are entitled, including:

  • Medical benefits — Workers’ compensation covers the cost of medical treatment, surgery, hospitalization, medical equipment, prescriptions and other medical expenses incurred due to the work injury or illness.
  • Lost wages or salary — Employees may receive compensation for lost wages of up to two-thirds of their average weekly wage, subject to the state maximum. The total number of weeks of benefits depends on whether the employee is considered temporarily or permanently disabled and whether he or she can return to work. An employee who is considered partially disabled receives 50 percent of the difference between his or her weekly wages and the reduced rate of wages during the period of disability.
  • Rehabilitation expenses — If you are unable to return to your work due to the injury, you may be entitled to vocational rehabilitation expenses to learn how to do a different job.
  • Funeral expenses — If the work accident resulted in your loved one’s death, workers’ compensation may cover up to $7,000 in reasonable funeral expenses.
  • Dependents’ recovery for worker’s death — If your loved one died from the work accident, you may be able to receive dependents’ benefits. The amount of benefits depends on the worker’s average weekly wage and family composition. For example, if the decedent was the only income earner, dependents can receive two-thirds of the person’s average weekly wage up to the state maximum.

The amount of benefits to which you are entitled depends on a variety of factors. An experienced workers’ compensation attorney at our firm can give you an accurate assessment for your particular case. And, if you are denied benefits, we also handle appeals to the Workers’ Compensation Commission and to the courts.
